We tend to talk about time like it’s the issue.
“I don’t have enough time.”
“There just aren’t enough hours in the day.”
But time isn’t the problem.
Time is neutral. It doesn’t play favorites. It doesn’t expand or contract based on your stress level.
What does change… is how you value it.
Time Is a Reflection of Self-Value
Your calendar is one of the most honest mirrors you have. (Kind of like horses)
It reveals:
- What you believe is important
- Who you believe is important
- And—most critically—where you fall on that list
When I work with business owners and leaders, I consistently see one core dynamic:
Your use of time is a direct expression of your internal valuing system.
And that system is often distorted.
The Clash: Your Time vs. Everyone Else’s Time
Here’s where things get interesting.
Most people aren’t just managing time—they’re unconsciously ranking it.
- Your client’s urgency vs. your own priorities
- Your team’s needs vs. your energy
- Your family’s expectations vs. your bandwidth
And in that ranking, many leaders consistently place themselves at the bottom.
This creates an internal and external clash. Do you ever...
- Feel pulled in multiple directions
- Overcommit.
- Override your own needs.
- Eventually… resentment and burnout creep in.
Not because you don’t care.
But because your valuing system is out of alignment.
Over-Obligation: The Hidden Cost of Low Self-Value
Let’s call it what it is.
Many people who feel “over obligated” are not actually dealing with a time problem.
They are dealing with a self-value problem.
It shows up as:
- Saying yes when you mean no
- Filling your calendar out of guilt or expectation
- Prioritizing everyone else’s needs ahead of your own
At its core, the belief sounds like:
“Other people’s needs matter more than mine.”
That belief will always create time poverty.
The Other Side: Busy-ness as a Worth Strategy
There’s another pattern that’s just as common—and a little sneakier.
Some leaders don’t undervalue themselves…
They over-function to prove their value.
This is the “busy equals important” mindset.
- Packed calendars become a badge of honor.
- Rest feels unproductive.
- Space feels uncomfortable.
- And slowing down feels like losing relevance.
The truth?
Busy-ness is not a measure of value. It’s often a compensation for not feeling valuable enough.
Time Poverty Isn’t About Time
What most people call “time scarcity” or "time poverty" is actually:
- Lack of boundaries.
- Misaligned priorities.
- Emotional obligations.
- And unconscious beliefs about worth, visibility, and control.
If your calendar is full of things you should do instead of things you’re called to do…
You’re not managing time ~ You’re managing internal conflict.
Your Calendar Tells the Truth
If you want to understand your current life…
Look at your calendar.
It will show you:
- Where your energy is leaking.
- Where you’re overcommitted.
- Where you’re undervaluing yourself.
- And where you’ve said “yes” at the expense of what truly matters.
And here’s the hard truth most people avoid:
Every “yes” on your calendar is a “no” to something else.
The question is…Are you saying no to the right things?
What Changes Everything
Real change doesn’t come from better time management tools ~ It comes from recalibrating your valuing system.
- Recognizing that your time is not less important than anyone else’s.
- Creating space instead of filling it.
- Letting go of obligation-driven decisions.
- And aligning your calendar with what actually matters.
This is where freedom begins.
